For differing reasons, we have experienced a sequence of amazing homecomings in recent years. Homecomings in 2015 and 2016 were fueled by alumni who worked long hours to reach out to reestablish connections and reinvigorate our annual gatherings. Homecoming 2017 saw us celebrate the legacy of our music department and the decades of service and leadership by Gerald Orr, a mentor to thousands. In 2018, we rededicated the refurbished bell from Old Main and changed the format of our meetings. Our expansion of activities into Friday has increased time for personal interaction; our chapter luncheons continue to grow, and our connections and contributions to our college grow as well. Our homecoming attendance for the last 4 years has been more than three hundred with one year topping four hundred in attendance. How do we top that? We don’t top it, but we definitely build on it. This year has it all.
This year is about giving thanks for the ministry of our college by celebrating the JC legacy through the accomplishments of giants who have graced our campus. The most obvious and publicized will be Carl Herrera, class of ’88. Carl is among the finest basketball players in our college's long history. Those teams from the 80’s gave us much to cheer about and much to remember with great pride. The Coming Home Royalty and Distinguished Alumnus to be recognized on Saturday morning don’t have the notoriety of Carl, but their contributions are of global significance. This is the stuff of which books could and should be written. We will be recognizing no less than four giants on February 1 and 2. We will also emphasize alumni who attended Jacksonville College in the years ending in 9 (1949, 1959, 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, 2009). This is a "bucket list" event that those who love our college and its ministry will not want to miss.

Carl Herrera Returns for Homecoming
Carl Herrera, a Venezuelan basketball player and 1987-89 alumnus of Jacksonville College, is coming home to JC where his United States basketball career began. While attending Jacksonville College, Carl was named NJCAA All American, and, along with the 1987-1988 Jaguar men’s team, he placed 8th in the 1988 NJCAA Championship. Carl continued his basketball career with the University of Houston Cougars and later was drafted as the first Venezuelan to play the NBA. As a player for the Houston Rockets, Carl assisted his team in winning back-to-back NBA Championships in 1994 and 1995.
Join us at Homecoming 2019 as we celebrate the legacy of Carl Herrera and other distinguished JC alumni who have made their marks in a variety of fields and ministries.
JC alumnus Carl Herrera will be honored at Homecoming 2019 on February 2.
