Q: How will I be able to afford college?
A: College is becoming more expensive each year. Many students may qualify for federal money (often referred to as PELL) by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Federal money is grant money, not a loan. At Jacksonville College 95% of our students attend on an AWARD PACKAGE. For instance, if you live off-campus and drive (or walk) to JC you can save up to 55% off of your tuition.

Q: Do I have to attend college from 8 – 3 like high school?
A: No. In college you set your own schedule. Classes generally meet on MWF (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) or on TTH (Tuesday and Thursday). There are classes that meet in the evening and there are also some classes that only meet once a week. Thus, some semesters, it is possible to arrange your schedule so you attend class only a few days a week.

Q: What does it mean to attend class full-time?
A: A full-time student is considered a student who is enrolled in 12 credit hours.

Q: What is a credit hour?
A: As a general rule, one semester (credit) hour is given for each hour of lecture a week per semester. You can determine how many credit hours are in one class by the common course numbering system.

Q: Do you have six weeks tests in college?
A: No. College classes are based on semester. You are enrolled in the same classes for a whole semester (August – December or January – May) and you have midterm exams as well as end of semester exams. The next semester you enroll in new classes.

Q: What is a GPA and why is it important?
A: GPA stands for grade point average. At Jacksonville College, and most other colleges, GPA is based on a 4.0 scale. An A (90-100) is a 4.0, B (80-89) is a 3.0, C (70-79) is a 2.0, D (60-69) is a 1.0, F (0-59) is a 0.0. Yes, you can make a D in college. However, D’s don’t transfer from one college to another.

Q: Will I receive a report card in college?
A: You will receive a grade report at the end of each semester.

Q: What is the difference between an Associate’s Degree and a Bachelor’s Degree?
A: An associate’s degree is a two-year degree offered by junior colleges. You can get an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree at Jacksonville College. A Bachelor’s degree is a four year college degree. You can receive a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science Degree. Students who attend class with us transfer to a four-year college after attaining their associate’s degree. An associate’s degree is equal to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree.

Q: What is meant by the term undergraduate and graduate student?
A: You are considered an undergraduate until the time you complete your bachelor’s degree. Once you have attained your bachelor’s degree you can pursue a master’s degree, Ph.D., or M.D. Any of those programs are considered to be graduate study.

Q: How much does college cost?
A: I can only answer this question for Jacksonville College. Tuition is $185/credit hour. There are also fees that you are responsible to pay as well. We are one of the most inexpensive colleges in the area.

Q: Do I have to take an entrance exam for Jacksonville College?
A: Because Jacksonville College is a private college, we are not subject to the THEA mandate. However, should you transfer to a state school, you may still be subject to taking the THEA test. We do require that you take a standardized test to enroll for class. Your TAKS test, the ACT, or the SAT can all meet this requirement. For students who have passed all portions of the TAKS test, but who have no SAT or ACT scores, it is required to take a placement test on our campus.
