Mathematics Summer Camp for JISD Students

(June 26, 2004) Kim Childs - Jacksonville College and the Jacksonville Independent School District are pleased to host a Texas Middle and Secondary Mathematics Summer Institute for JISD students who have completed the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. This math camp will be held on the campus of Jacksonville College at 105 B.J. Albritton Drive on July 6 - 9 from 1:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to make connections in mathematics through a variety of activities such as investigating fractions with tortillas and pizzas, designing and flying a kite, finding the surface area of an orange, and building and launching a rocket! Each camp participant will receive a T-shirt. Teachers for the camp have been selected from participants in the Texas Middle and Secondary Mathematics project at Stephen F. Austin State University.

This project is funded by the National Science Foundation. There is no charge for students attending the camp. Parents will be responsible for transporting their students to and from Jacksonville College. Enrollment is limited. Over half of the available positions have already been filled! On site registration will begin at 12:30 pm on July 6. For more information or to enroll your student in this exciting and innovative program please contact Judy Terry at the JISD Administrative Offices, (903) 586-6511, or Tam Clark at Jacksonville College, (903) 586-2518.
